Contemporary Family Home Designed for Entertaining

House Klerksdorp holds a special place in our story. It was the very first project we completed for clients who would later become long-standing collaborators and dear friends.

At the time, the couple were newly married and at the beginning of an exciting chapter in their lives. He was building his career in property development and construction across the mining regions of the North West, and Klerksdorp became their base. The house they purchased was large and full of potential – a five-bedroom home with a swimming pool, tennis court and generous entertainment spaces.

What it needed was thoughtful design to bring cohesion, warmth, and a sense of contemporary ease to a home destined to host family and friends.

The brief was clear from the outset: create a modern, understated interior that felt calm, minimal and comfortable for entertaining. The clients gravitated towards neutral palettes and clean lines, and colour was deliberately kept to a minimum. Instead, the design focused on layered textures and refined finishes in whites, soft greys and natural tones.

The overall aesthetic balanced contemporary simplicity with subtle classic elements. Deep button-back dining chairs and tailored bedroom headboards introduced timeless detailing, while the broader scheme remained modern and uncluttered.

Furniture throughout the home was largely bespoke. Custom dining tables were designed specifically for the space, and many of the key pieces were made to order. The clients had a strong preference for leather over fabric, so sofas and dining chairs were upholstered in leather to create durability while maintaining a refined, masculine elegance.

Because entertaining was central to the family’s lifestyle, several spaces were designed with hosting in mind. A dedicated entertainment room was created for gatherings, complete with a cinema-style television, bar area, indoor braai and additional dining space – a place where friends could gather for rugby games, celebrations and long evenings together.

For quieter moments, a separate man cave was designed specifically for poker nights. A bespoke poker table and custom wallpaper gave the room a distinctive personality, creating a private retreat for relaxed evenings with friends.

Each bedroom was designed as a welcoming guest space, reflecting the couple’s love of hosting. Neutral wallpaper adds texture and softness to walls while keeping the palette calm and cohesive throughout the home.

The main bedroom became a particular highlight of the project. Instead of traditional occasional chairs, we introduced elegant daybeds at the foot of the room – a simple yet striking addition that added both function and a contemporary linear element to the space.

House Klerksdorp marked the beginning of a long creative journey with these clients. Looking back, it represents the starting point of a relationship that would grow over many years and many homes – from this first project to later works including De Jongh’s Maintenance and the remarkable Southdowns Manor.

Today, it stands as a reminder that every design story begins somewhere.
